Acts of Health Care Reform to Take Effect This Month

Health Care Reform is slated to take effect 2014 but changes along the way start this month and thereafter in 2011.
What you need to know:
1. Insurance companies will no longer be able to deny children coverage for pre-existing conditions.
2. Children of parents with insurance will be allowed to remain covered under those policies until the age of 26.
3. Insurance companies will be forbidden from terminating coverage for any other reason than customer fraud.
4. Insurance companies will no longer be able to cap the amount of benefits and treatment a person can receive in a lifetime.
5. Insurers can no longer charge customers for preventive services like mammograms and colonoscopies.
6. High-risk pools are mandated to cover those who have been denied coverage because of pre-existing conditions.

GED Testing

Frederick, MD-Frederick Community College is now the site for General Education Development (GED) testing in Frederick County. Candidates who pass the GED test receive a high school equivalency diploma.
GED candidates must register with the State of Maryland before taking the test. Applications are available on the Web site: http://www.dllr.state.md.us/gedmd/ged.shtml. A scheduling fee of $45 is required and must be submitted with the application in the form of a check or money order made payable to the GED Testing Office. Cash is not accepted.
The completed application with the requested supporting documents and the scheduling fee should be sent to: GED Testing Office, 1100 N. Eutaw Street, Room 121, Baltimore, Md., 21201.
GED testing at Frederick Community College will take place in B Building, Room B211/212.
Testing dates scheduled this fall include Friday and Saturday, September 10 and 11, October 15 and 16, November 19 and 20, and December 10 and 11. Testing is from 4:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Fridays and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays. Students must attend both Friday and Saturday to complete the two-day test.
Candidates who have applied and paid the testing fee should come to campus allowing at least 15 minutes to park and find the classroom. Testing begins promptly and no one is admitted once testing has begun.
FCC is also offering the GED Preparation program to help students prepare for the GED test. Students must be at least 16 years old and officially withdrawn from high school. Attendance at an orientation session and a placement test are required.

Lisa Rice recently received a twenty-five year service award from her Postmaster, Nelson Dorsey at the Thurmont post Office. Lisa started her postal career at the Frederick, MD Post Office on March 30, 1985. Lisa is currently a Bulk Mail Technician at the Postal Unit located inside the R.R. Donnelley mailing plant located in Thurmont, MD. Her knowledge and experience is nothing short of excellent! She is the epitome of what a postal clerk should be.
Mrs. Rice and her husband Bruce, live in Thurmont and have three children; Heather, Taylor and Matthew. Thank-You Lisa!

New Thurmont Police Officer Sworn In
September 2, 2010
On September 1, 2010 Officer Jerry Morales was sworn into service by Mayor
Martin Burns. Officer Morales retired from the Frederick Police Department
after nineteen (19) years of service and has joined the Thurmont Police
Department as a veteran officer with investigative experience. Officer Morales
entered law enforcement in 1985 through the United States Army as a Military
Police Officer. He served from June 1985 through February 1990 and attained the
rank of Sergeant. From April through September 1990, he worked as a contractual
court security officer for the US Marshalls Service and performed court security
at the United States Attorney’s Office in Washington DC. From October 1990
through October 2009, he served with the Frederick Police Department as a sworn
police officer. His assignments included uniform patrol, mountain bicycle
patrol, canine and criminal investigations. Officer Morales is from Pontiac
Michigan and came to Maryland through his service with the United States Army.
He is married and has three children who are active in sports.
