Creating Jobs for Maryland

October 15, 2010

Dear Friends,

In the battle to recover stronger and rebound faster from the national recession, there will be some states that win and some states that lose.  Because we’ve been making tough choices together, Maryland is winning.  This year we’re growing twice as fast as the rest of the nation.  If we are to continue to win, we must choose to move forward by creating jobs, saving jobs, and protecting priorities like public education, affordable college, and public safety — with a government that works and fights for you.

This week, the Sage Policy Group and the Nearing Group reported that the University of Maryland Baltimore County’s ACTiVATE program is having a positive impact on Maryland’s economy.  The ACTiVATE Entrepreneur Training Program creates jobs and generates income for local and State government.  More than 30 companies have been created since its inception in 2005 and these companies have hired and expect to hire a total of 124 employees by the end of 2011.  The program produces jobs at a low cost, estimated to be about $6,000 per job, and generates on average $460,000 in income tax revenue annually for local and State governments in Maryland.

As the holiday months approach us, the Gazette reports that Maryland can expect a boost in retail jobs, with stores like Macy’s expecting to hire about 65,000 employees, while Kohl’s, who added three stores in Maryland, is expecting to hire 700 new seasonal positions this year.  Holiday retail sales are expected to increase nationally by 2.3 percent this year to $447.1 billion, according to the National Retail Federation.

In other related seasonal jobs news, we learned that UPS announced the addition of 1,548 seasonal jobs in Maryland and a total of 50,000 seasonal jobs this year for drivers, UPS storage facilities workers and administrative staff. The new jobs will support the holiday season and will run from October through February of next year.

Finally, we learned that the financial giant, Morgan Stanley, is looking for analysts and developers for its IT team in Baltimore and has other positions open in Annapolis, Hunt Valley and Bethesda.  The company expanded its operations in Baltimore and plans to hire 50 more employees by the end of the year.

Currently distribution of this food is scheduled for the Monday before Thanksgiving and the Monday before Christmas but the Food Bank will not be able to provide the food without help from the community. Monetary donations are also welcome and will be used to purchase turkeys or chickens and any items we have not received. Please look at the lists below and then call Pastor Sally at 301-271-1090 if you or your group can help provide this food.

Bob Ehrlich to Discuss 43 New Taxes He Will Stop Next Year as Governor

When Governor Martin O’Malley enacted the largest tax increase in Maryland history in 2007, the legislature also considered extending the sales tax to 43 new services, including motor vehicle repair, cable TV, tax preparation, barber and beauty services, gym memberships, and many others.  Jim Jennings Auto Transmission, which will host Bob Ehrlich tomorrow, is one of thousands of small businesses that would be subject to the new tax if enacted. As Governor, Bob Ehrlich will oppose tax increases on new services that hurt families and job creation.  He will repeal Governor O’Malley’s 20% increase in the sales tax.  Governor O’Malley refuses to rule out raising taxes next year even though he passed $6.3 billion in tax increases in his first term. Owners, employees, and customers of Jim Jennings Transmission will be present.
