Summer Art Exhibit-Thurmont Regional Library

May 30, 2010

Summer Exhibit hosts local artists  by Erin Dingle

The summer exhibit at the Thurmont Regional Library Art Gallery will feature a pair of talented local artists: Emily Sloviko and Nancy Houston. Opening reception will be June 6 at 1 p.m. and their work will hang until August 27. The gallery is open every Sunday from 1-4 p.m.

Emily Sloviko was born and raised in Winchester, Virginia but has lived in the Thurmont area for many years.  She and her husband Fred have owned and operated the Rambler Inn in Thurmont for 30 years. Before retiring in 2004, Emily never formally trained as an artist but her mother, Earlene Cone, an artist of many mediums, introduced her to oil paint at an early age. Emily is drawn to realistic style of painting and she primarily works in acrylics now.

Nancy Houston is a long time resident of Thurmont and is currently employed as a surgical assistant at Catoctin Veterinary Clinic. She currently enjoys painting the dogs, cats, horses and other pets that have formed a special bond with their people.  Nancy has a strong family history in the arts so it was not surprising that she felt a calling to the visual arts at an early age. She began her instruction in her early 20’s under local artist Dennis Blalock at his Firedrake Fine Arts Studio, in Thurmont. Dennis’s instruction focused not only on the craft of painting but the more important art of seeing. Nancy experimented with many mixed media techniques before finding acrylic on canvas to be her method of choice.

Nancy loves to paint animals doing what they do best, in settings and situations where they are offering us a glimpse in to their world. “A dog being dog-like is a thing of beauty to behold” She is currently accepting portrait commissions, and can be reached via e-mail at nancyzoo91@comcast.net.

DIY Classes at FCC

May 11, 2010

They are real plumbersFrederick Community College’s Continuing Education Division is offering several classes in May and June for do-it-yourselfers who might need a little help on home renovation projects. The Wednesday evening classes will be held at the Advanced Workforce Training Center at 200 Monroe Avenue in Frederick. Allen Tritsch, a contractor with almost 30 years of experience will teach the classes.

Leslier Ruby, program manager for personal enrichment in the Customized Training and Continuing Education division, said “What participants learn will be worth more than what they’ll pay for these classes. Knowledge is priceless!”

The first class, DIY: Conduct an Energy Audit & Tips to Improve Efficiency (HOM301), is scheduled for Wednesday, May 19 from 6:30-9 p.m. For the $23 fee, participants will learn that an energy audit does not have to be difficult or intimidating. Tritsch says the time is right, just before the heat of summer, for homeowners to review their home’s energy use. The review can identify numerous areas that, if improved, will lead to more efficient operations all year long. The class will outline information participants need to know to conduct an energy audit and discuss no cost or low cost ways to improve energy efficiency. Topics include caulking, weather stripping, insulation, ventilation, heating, air conditioning, windows, doors, and water heating.Tritsch will teach DIY: Tiling for Homeowners (HOM302) on Wednesday, May 26 and on June 2. Each class is from 6:30-9:30 p.m. and the total cost for both sessions is $54. Ceramic tile is a low maintenance, durable and stylish way to update residential flooring and walls. Designed for homeowners who want to install or repair ceramic tile, this hands-on class will teach about floor preparation, tile selection, layout, and the installation and replacement of damaged tiles.

The final class in the series is DIY: Plumbing for Homeowners (HOM303) on Wednesday, June 9 and 16 from 6:30-9:30 p.m., total cost for both sessions, $54. Knowing what to do in a plumbing emergency can save time and money, but do-it-yourselfers need to learn safe methods. In this class, Tritsch will focus on common plumbing problems such as unclogging a toilet or garbage disposal, fixing a leaky faucet, shutting off water at the main valve, or installing new plumbing fixtures. This class will help participants figure out when to call a plumber versus when to attempt the do-it-yourself way.

In the fall, Tritsch will teach several new classes for do-it-yourselfers, to include kitchen cabinets, drywall installation and interior painting.

To register for summer or fall classes, go to www.frederick.edu/personalenrichment and click on Home Projects, or call Leslie Ruby at 301.624.2820.
